Speech Broadside:
Leonard Church
-
PROJECT OVERVIEW
This Speech Broadside Exploration project turns a strong spoken moment into an
equally compelling visual work, getting inspiration from Leonard Church's sad farewell in
Red vs. Blue Season 13, Episode 20, which combines themes of memory, identity, and sacrifice.
The design, centered on a single line extracted straight from the speech, creates a visual narrative
using carefully picked images and emotive typography, encouraging viewers to experience the
message in a new and captivating way. Presented in print and digital formats, broadside aims to
reach audiences across multiple platforms, resonating on different emotional levels. This project
is aimed at anyone who appreciates the influence of a well-crafted message and the role of
thoughtful design, demonstrating how the interaction of text and images can transform
spoken words into a striking, introspective and connective experience.

APPROACH
My approach to this project was highly experimental, driven by the search for a format that could elevate the emotional and conceptual impact of the speech. I explored various layouts and typographic structures before arriving at a composition where the text appears to collapse towards the center like a black hole – a visual metaphor that aligns perfectly with the spatial themes of the speech.
This direction inspired the selection of an image featuring a cosmic setting with a dynamic Star Wars-style hyperspatial effect, whose radiant light naturally guided the positioning of the text and enhanced the sense of movement and focus. I also experimented with subtly warped text versions that straddled legibility and abstraction to highlight discourse's transforming power. Through this iterative approach, I was able to combine visual aspects with the power of language, creating a design that is both expressive and philosophically resonant.
